Is Occupy Wall Street outperforming the Red Cross in hurricane relief?

In Sunset Park, a predominantly Mexican and Chinese neighborhood in South Brooklyn, St. Jacobi’s Church was one of the go-to hubs for people who wanted to donate food, clothing, and warm blankets or volunteer help other New Yorkers who were still suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. On Saturday, Ethan Murphy, one of the people heading the kitchen operation, estimated they would prepare and send out 10,000 meals to people in need. Thousands and thousands of pounds of clothes were being sorted, labeled, and distributed, and valuable supplies like heaters and generators were being loaded up in cars to be taken out to the Rockaways, Staten Island and other places in need. However, this well-oiled operation wasn’t organized by the Red Cross, New York Cares, or some other well-established volunteer group. This massive effort was the handiwork of none other than Occupy Wall Street—the effort is known as Occupy Sandy.

The scene at St. Jacobis on Saturday was friendly, orderly chaos. Unlike other shelters that had stopped collecting donations or were looking for volunteers with special skills such as medical training, Occupy Sandy was ready to take anyone willing to help. A wide range of people pitched in, including a few small children making peanut butter sandwiches, but most volunteers were in their 20s and 30s. A large basement rec room had become a hive of vegetable chopping and clothes bagging. They held orientations throughout the day for new volunteers. One of the orientation leaders, Ian Horst, who has been involved with a local group called Occupy Sunset Park for the past year, says he was “totally blown away by the response” and the sheer numbers of people who showed up and wanted to help. He estimated that he’d given an orientation to 200 people in the previous hour.

By midday, a line stretched all the way down the block of people who’d already attended orientation and were waiting for rides to be dispatched to volunteer. Kiley Edgley and Eric Schneider had been waiting about 20 minutes and were toward the front of the line. Like several people I spoke to, the fact that this effort was being organized by the occupy movement wasn’t a motivating factor—they found out about the opportunity to volunteer online and just wanted to help.

So how did an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, best known as a leaderless movement that brought international attention to issues of economic injustice through the occupation of Zucotti Park in the financial district last year, become a leader in local hurricane relief efforts? Ethan Murphy, who was helping organize the food at St. Jacobis and had been cooking for the occupy movement over the past year, explained there wasn’t any kind of official decision or declaration that occupiers would now try to help with the hurricane aftermath. “This is what we do already, “ he explained: Build community, help neighbors, and create a world without the help of finance. Horst said, “We know capitalism is broken, so we have already been focused on organizing to take care of our own [community] needs.” He sees Occupy Sandy as political ideas executed on a practical level.

As frustration grows around the city about the pace and effectiveness of the response from FEMA, and other government agencies and the Red Cross, I imagine both concerned New Yorkers and storm victims alike will remember who was out on the front lines.

Even looking at these I have tears in my eyes.

I know for those of us who were standing on that square this will not be forgotton.
And I hope that for those who are exposed to the footage over the coming weeks and those who were witness to it today in Melbourne city it will provoke compassion.

I have already had this conversation on my facebook about it that I will post below and hopefully it will make people think twice before calling us crazy for doing this, when what we were doing was commemorating the loss of loved ones and trying to raise awareness for their brothers and sisters still suffering, as opposed to eating their rotting flesh like so many others that have dead animals on their dinner plates:

ME: I dont quite understand what you mean?

THEM:To stand there with dead animals is crazy and so in your face. That will stir up a lot of good and bad controversity. But it defiantly will get people talking

ME: I dont really see how it’s crazy, since so many people stand around holding dead animals between burger buns and sandwhich slices every day. These animals were loved ones that we were commemorating. I do hope it stirs up a lot of talk and makes people think about why we were doing it.

THEM:Seeing a burger to seeing a dead animal is completely different. It’s very confronting. Also I’m using the word crazy in meaning wow that’s an out their way of showing a point.

ME: thankyou for your input, But a burger IS a dead animal. Its just been prepared in a way that people dont have to think about it. I think that was one of the aims of this action, to make people think about that. In the news article Felicity mentions about that aspect

THEM: One famous meat chef said you should look into the eyes of the animal you are about to eat, so you understand that it is a living thing and you need to respect it. I think there should be more education on that so people really understand where the meat comes from and if they still choose to eat meat the should go organic and respect and understand where it came from.

ME: unfortunately the term “organic” doesnt change the slaughter process for animals, most times it doesnt change their living conditions either, it just changes what theyre fed.
In Patty’s speech today she said (probably not an exact quote but close enough) “we arent here that you may improve the welfare of animals, we are here as a matter of social justice so that you may stop treating them as products all together”.

As I’m tearing up looking at these pictures, I’m thinking “HEY! Organize something like this in Charleston!” But then I remembered that probably 75% of the local population already took FB pictures posing with the animals they murdered themselves this year. Soooooo, I’m not quite sure how effective t’would be. /:

But, this is a really touching form of action. Very confronting.

US Drone Strike Kills Five in North Waziristan as Lawsuit Looms :

Fresh off of a major anti-drone march across northern Pakistan, the US has struck again. This time the drones attacked a house in Mir Ali, North Waziristan Agency, killing five people. Officials say they have no indication of the identities of any of the victims.

The strike seems ill-timed, bringing yet more attention to the march, and also coming as a lawsuit is getting underway in Peshawar, where the family of one of the civilians killed in a 2011 US strike is suing.

The lawsuit, brought by the family of Daud Khan, one of scores of civilians killed in an attack on a tribal jirga on March 17, 2011, seeks redress from the Pakistani government for failing to pursue any sort of action against those who killed him, as well as to press Pakistan to stop such attacks in the future.

The lawsuit focuses on Pakistan’s Constitution, which obliges the government to protect the life and liberty of its citizens. It is the first major legal challenge to the attacks launched in Pakistan, while lawsuits seeking more details about the attacks have stalled in the US on claims of national secrecy.
